The Dead Hand system, also known as "Perimeter," was designed to automatically launch Russia's nuclear arsenal if it detected a nuclear strike on Russian soil and lost communication with its command and control.

The system relied on ground sensors spread across the country. These sensors were capable of detecting nuclear explosions, seismic activity, and other signs of an attack.

If the sensors detected nuclear explosions and there was no communication from the command center, the Dead Hand system would automatically launch all of Russia's remaining nuclear weapons at the United States. This system didn't require human intervention, hence the name "Dead Hand."

At the height of the Cold War, Russia had around 30,000 nuclear warheads. The Dead Hand system would launch all these warheads at the United States in retaliation, ensuring a devastating counterattack even if the leadership was wiped out.

The message was clear: "Don't you dare launch at us, or even our own dead hand will get you." It was a deterrent strategy aimed at preventing an attack by guaranteeing a massive retaliation.

The system was kept on high alert, with regular checks and maintenance to ensure it was always ready. This constant vigilance was a testament to the paranoia and high stakes of the Cold War era.
