The Mystery of Time Perception
What if I told you that in just a few months, 2020 will be five years ago? How does that make you feel? Many people say that since the pandemic, it feels like time has been moving insanely fast. This feeling is at the heart of time perception theory, which explores how our brains perceive time throughout our lives.
When you're young, each year is a huge part of your life. On your first birthday, one year makes up 100% of your life. By your second birthday, one year is 50% of your life. By the time you turn 20, one year is only 5% of your life. As we age, each year feels shorter because it's a smaller percentage of our total life experience.
Imagine I asked you to run a mile. You'd be focused on every step. Now, imagine running 80 miles. At first, you'd notice every mile, but soon you'd go into autopilot, just trying to finish. This is like how we perceive time. Early in life, every year is filled with new experiences, but as we grow older, our days become more routine, making time feel like it's speeding up.
When you're young, everything is new and exciting. As you get older, fewer things surprise you, making time feel like it's moving faster. Think of your first day at a new school versus a regular day at work. The first day feels long and filled with new experiences, while a regular day can pass by in a blur.
Many people feel that time has flown by since the pandemic started. This is partly because our routines became monotonous. With fewer new experiences and changes, our perception of time sped up.
The key to slowing down time is to fill your life with new and exciting experiences. The more varied your activities and the more new things you try, the longer your days will feel.
Our brains use visual cues to help us perceive time. A cluttered, busy environment can make time feel slower, while a repetitive, boring setting can make it feel faster. Changing your environment regularly can help you feel like you have more time.
Time perception theory helps us understand why time feels like it's speeding up as we get older and how we can slow it down by filling our lives with new experiences. It's a reminder to make the most of every moment.
