Real-Time Deepfakes: Are You Ready?
We’re on the verge of something incredibly dangerous. Recently, a developer released a program on GitHub that allows deepfake filters to work in real time—on live video. Imagine this: deepfakes, which once required time and editing, can now be applied instantly during Zoom calls, FaceTime, and other live video platforms. This isn’t something that helps anyone. It’s a tool for hackers, scammers, and thieves, with the potential to wreak havoc.
Deepfakes have always been something people feared, but until now, they had to be done after a video was recorded, making it easier to detect. Now, with this new software, deepfakes can be used on live calls, opening the door for criminals to impersonate anyone instantly. It’s a terrifying shift that makes hacking and scamming even easier.

You’ve already seen small-scale versions of this tech through filters on Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok—where you can swap faces or add masks in real time. But this isn’t harmless fun anymore. What started as playful filters has evolved into something that can clone your face and voice in just seconds. The risks are huge.

This isn’t science fiction. In Hong Kong, a criminal deepfaked a CFO’s voice and face during a video call, convincing a company to transfer $25 million. They still haven’t caught the thief. If they can do it to a company, what’s stopping them from targeting your family or friends?

With just a few seconds of your voice and a photo, someone can create a clone of you. They can trick your loved ones or even access your accounts. That’s why it’s important to start conversations with your family about setting up “safe words” or phrases only your closest family members would know.

As deepfake technology grows, it’s no longer just governments and celebrities being targeted. Everyday people are at risk. Think about how often we video call, share our voice, or post pictures online. All of this is now potential fuel for identity theft or fraud.

What can you do? Start with awareness. Share this information with your family, set up safe phrases, and be cautious about the images and videos you share online. It’s time to start treating video calls with the same caution you would an unknown email.

We’re entering a time when even seeing isn’t believing anymore. The way we communicate and trust people will have to change. Staying informed and preparing for this new age of digital deception is key to protecting yourself.

We’re living in a time where technology can imitate us almost perfectly, and the consequences are serious. It’s time to be proactive, aware, and ready to protect yourself in this new digital era.
